Seamless Backgrounds

Don't you hate it when you make an absolutely beautiful tiled background, but when it repeats on your page, you can see the seams of where it tiles? Ah! It just doesn't look good! But there's an easy way to prevent this and make it looks a lot better!

Anyways, let's get started. Say you have the below image, and you think it's an awesome pattern! But let's look at what happens when you tile it on a background. Click the image below to see what happens.

Ew. All the seams are visible and gross. At this point, you have two options- make a background where the designs don't touch the side, but even then, the blank areas on the edge of your image will form a seam of blankness, or you can use the seamless tiling tool in Paint Shop Pro! Go to Effects>Image Effects>Seamless Tiling, or for those of you who need a visual,

The window that pops up (shown below) will give you a few different options for making seamless images, and I'm going to show you the effects of each one. First off, I usually keep 'Bidirectional' selected as my tiling direction, because then it makes both your sides and top/bottoms seamless.

The first tiling option it gives you is Edge. This is the result you get. Click the image to see how it looks as a background.

The second tiling option it gives you is Corner. This is the result you get. It kind of gives you a cool kaelidascope look sometimes. Click the image to see how it looks as a background.

And the last tiling option it gives you is Mirror. This is the result you get. Click the image to see how it looks as a background.

So now you can see the difference between all of them! In my opinion, Mirror tiling has the least distortion, but sometimes the distortion created by these effects can end up really cool! So before you trash your background because it has seams in it, try seamless tiling first!
